My name is Greg Macer
I became a nurse many years ago, back in 1978. At the time, nursing was definitely not a popular vocation chosen by men. Living in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, I had moved there after leaving the Army, where I was a musician. I had only spent a short time in the Army and was not really trained in any profession or trade other than music. So I was playing cover songs in bands at pubs and night clubs to make a living.
I really had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and I remember one day, sitting at the kitchen table with a few female nursing friends, we were discussing my potential career opportunities. These girls worked as nurses at the Kalgoorlie Hospital and they strongly recommended I go and see about getting into the Nurses training program… I was pretty hesitant to say the least, but they encouraged me to go and apply, reassuring me that they would help me.
I was really reluctant because I would never have considered such an option had they not been so insistent, and after giving it a bit of thought I figured, I had nothing to lose, so I too their advice and went up to inquire. Perhaps providentially, I was told that they had a class starting in two weeks, and stated that someone had just dropped out. They handed me a bunch of papers and said get these filled out asap, and you can start in 2 weeks.
Well the rest, as they say is history! I obviously applied and here I still am. Nursing became the unlikely career that I turned out to love and has proved to be very personally rewarding over the years.
During my career path I have had the honour of many titles, such as:
Nursing Aide, Enrolled Nurse to EEN, Registered Nurse, Clinical Nurse, Professional Development Nurse, Clinical Governance Support Officer, Patient Safety Officer, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Quality Coordinator and at present, Nurse Unit Manager.
I have tended to focus most of my career around surgical nursing, and in particular have specialized in ‘Critical Care’ areas such as Intensive Care, Emergency and of course Theatre. I also have medical and surgical experience , however the majority of my experienced is as a Peri-Operative Nurse.
